Engineering Hiring in 2027: What We Expect

Post by:Núria Archer November 4, 2026November 4, 2026

Last month, we looked at one of the clearest shifts we saw in 2026:

Engineering hiring became more specific.

Going into 2027, we expect that trend to continue.

The companies that hire successfully will not necessarily be the ones hiring the most.

They will be the companies making the most intentional hires tied to clear business outcomes.

Here are a few areas we expect engineering leaders to focus on:

  • Productivity and throughput. Companies will continue looking for engineers who can improve processes, remove bottlenecks, reduce downtime, and help operations do more with existing resources.
  • Automation and technology. Engineers who can implement automation, controls, digital tools, and AI in practical ways will continue to be valuable.
  • Cross-functional execution. The strongest engineers will increasingly be those who can work across manufacturing, operations, supply chain, project management, customers, and leadership.
  • Specialized experience. Industry knowledge, equipment familiarity, technical depth, and experience solving similar problems will continue to be difficult to replace.
  • Leadership and succession. Companies will also need to think beyond today’s openings and identify who can become their next technical leader, engineering manager, or subject-matter expert.

The bigger question for 2027

Before opening a requisition, companies should ask:

What does this person need to accomplish in the first 6 to 12 months?

Do they need to improve throughput?

Launch a new product?

Reduce downtime?

Support a capital project?

Build a team?

Strengthen quality?

Drive automation?

The answer should shape the job description, interview process, and candidate profile.

Our 2027 outlook

The strongest engineering teams will be built through specific hires tied to specific business needs.

That means defining the problem first, and then finding the engineer with the experience to solve it.

But identifying the right hire is only part of the equation.

Next month, we will look at how companies can turn those hiring priorities into a stronger engineering workforce plan, before an urgent need becomes an urgent search.

If engineering growth, succession planning, or a difficult-to-fill technical role is part of your 2027 plan, now is the time to start that conversation.
