This is Your Year! Break These 4 Bad Job Searching Habits Today!

Post by:The Reserves Network January 23, 2019April 9, 2024

Has your job search stalled? Are you sending out a lot of applications but your phone isn’t ringing? You could be engaging in some bad job search habits. Unfortunately, these bad habits are easy to fall into – but – good news! – they are also easy to correct. If you’re ready to land a new job this year, break these four bad job searching habits today.

Ignoring Cover Letters

If you’re like most job seekers, you spend a lot of time applying for jobs online. The process can be mundane and repetitive, so when you finally get to the portion of the application where you can upload a cover letter, you skip the step. After all, who reads cover letters in 2019? Answer – pretty much every hiring manager. Your cover letter is the chance to provide some insight into who you are and the value you bring to the table. It is a place to connect the dots, and even address potential issues like a gap in your work history. If you’re not sending custom cover letters, you could be sabotaging your search.

Using The Same Resume For Every Application

This is one of the most common bad habits of job seekers. It is a time-saver but it could be costing you interviews. Automated systems score your resume based on how well it matches the job description. If you’re not tailoring your resume to each job, you could be getting looked over. Before applying, look at the job description for important keywords and requirements and make sure your resume incorporates those elements.

Going To An Interview Unprepared

No matter what job you are applying for, it is important to research the company ahead of time so you fully understand what they do. Hiring managers are looking for people who want to be on the job, and research shows that you’re interested and invested in the opportunity. Spend time on the company website and social media accounts before every interview.

Forgetting To Ask About Next Steps

If you want to demonstrate your interest in a job, ask about next steps at the close of the interview. This is an easy question to forget because the relief you feel at the close of an interview can be overwhelming.  Come to the interview prepared with a written list of a few questions to ask the hiring manager and include, “What are next steps I can expect?” so that you never forget to ask this critical question.
