Position Overview:
Public Works Department is seeking a skilled and safety-conscious Heavy Equipment Operator to join our team. This position is responsible for operating and maintaining a variety of heavy construction equipment to support maintenance, construction, and repair projects throughout the municipality. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with equipment such as backhoes, mini excavators, bobcats, and Gradalls.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate heavy equipment including but not limited to backhoes, mini excavators, skid-steer loaders (Bobcats), and Gradalls.
- Perform construction, maintenance, and repair tasks on public infrastructure such as roads, sidewalks, storm drains, and public buildings.
- Conduct daily equipment inspections and basic maintenance to ensure proper and safe operation.
- Follow safety protocols and regulations set forth by OSHA and municipal guidelines.
- Work with a team or independently on assigned tasks; coordinate with supervisors and other staff as necessary.
- Assist with snow removal, debris cleanup, and emergency response operations as needed.
- Maintain accurate logs of work performed and equipment used.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid driver’s license; CDL preferred or ability to obtain.
- Minimum 2 years of experience operating heavy equipment, preferably in a municipal or construction environment.
- Demonstrated experience operating backhoes, mini excavators, bobcats, and Gradalls.
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, maps, and technical manuals.
- Strong understanding of equipment safety practices and mechanical aptitude.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work in outdoor environments in various weather conditions.
- Must be able to sit, stand, walk, climb, kneel, and operate controls for extended periods.
Additional Information:
- Position may require overtime, on-call, and weekend work, particularly during emergency situations or severe weather events.
- Background check and drug screening required upon offer of employment.
