Why You Should Pick up the Phone When a Recruiter Calls

Post by:The Reserves Network February 13, 2020

When the phone rings and it’s an unfamiliar number, no one is likely to pick up. That’s just the nature of our text message and social media-driven lives today. However, if the phone rings and it’s a recruiter on the other end of the line, it’s worth it to find out what they have to say, even if you aren’t actively looking for a new job.

They Could Have the Perfect Job for You

Even if you’re happy where you are, it’s worth taking a few minutes out of your day to learn about new opportunities. If the job does end up being fantastic, you’ll be glad you took the call.

New Connections Are Always Beneficial

Building your network is always a good idea. That’s why it’s worth your time to hear what the recruiter has to say and keep an open mind. If the opportunity they present doesn’t sound perfect for you, thank them for their interest and keep the door open by asking if you can keep in touch. This ensures you will stay on the recruiter’s radar and that you’ll hear about new opportunities that are more aligned with your needs and skillset.

Take the Opportunity to Assess Your Situation

Talking with a recruiter can force you to stop and think about where you are today and where you want to go in the future. This opportunity allows you to reflect on your skills, strengths, talents and even your weaknesses. Thinking about your career trajectory and whether or not you’re on the right path is a great exercise, no matter how happy you are at your current job.

Learn Your Market Value

A great and often unexpected benefit of talking to a recruiter is the opportunity to learn your market value. When was the last time you checked out salaries in your area for your job title? What if you discover there are employers paying more and offering better benefits? It’s important to get a handle on your true value. A conversation with a recruiter can help you learn exactly what you are worth.
