3 Ways To Separate Yourself From Other Job Applicants

Post by:The Reserves Network October 6, 2022

Let’s face it: job searching is tough. There are thousands of other applicants with similar experience and qualifications as you, all competing for one or two positions. Once you’ve submitted your application, there’s little you can do to improve your chances of landing the position—unless you make yourself stand out from the crowd in some way.

There are three solid ways to help yourself stand out from other applicants, such as coming armed with specific questions for the interviewer and references to skills and experiences you have that make you the perfect fit for the job.

Keep reading to find out more strategic ways you can help stand out from the competition during the interview process.

Research the company and position thoroughly.

Routinely, interviewers ask job applicants about their familiarity with the company and position. This is a chance for you to shine and showcase your interest in the job.

Researching the company thoroughly will allow you to:

  • Learn about what they do, who their customers are, and how they differentiate themselves from competitors.
  • Know exactly what skills are needed for this position (i.e., if there’s a skill that isn’t listed on your resume but is important for this role).
  • Ask specific questions that show your interest and willingness to learn.

Prepare for the interview process.

Before you interview, it’s important to research the company’s culture, values and mission statement. Not only will this information help you in the interview, but it will give you a good idea if your values align with what the company stands for. If it’s possible, you should also research the hiring manager’s background to see what role or experience they play in promoting the company’s culture.

When preparing for the actual interview, think about what common questions might be asked. Prepare answers to these questions in advance. It is helpful if you have prepared answers in written form to bring with you to the interview. Practice answering these questions out loud using a mirror before going on an actual face-to-face interview. If possible, practice interviewing with someone who has been through this process before so they can give feedback on your strengths and weaknesses throughout the process.

Follow up with the hiring manager.

Once you’ve been interviewed, it’s important to follow up. This will show hiring managers that you’re interested in the job and that you’re willing to put forth the extra effort to stand out from other applicants.

Here are some different ways you can follow-up with a hiring manager:

  • Thank you for talking with me today. I am excited about this opportunity and hope we can work together soon!
  • Thank you so much, again, for meeting with me yesterday. It was great getting a chance not only to learn more about the position but also to hear more about where your company is going in general. Please let me know if you need anything else from me.

The interview and application process can be stressful. If you take some time to research the company and position, prepare for an interview, and follow up, you will be on your way to getting hired! You also don’t need to do it alone. Experienced recruiters like those at The Reserves Network can help you begin your job search by matching your skills and interests with an incredibly rewarding career.
