Job Description:
The HSE Trainee supports the HSE Manager in maintaining a safe, compliant, and organized work environment, primarily within a shop or industrial setting. This entry-level role is hands-on and focused on learning core health, safety, and environmental processes through inspections, compliance support, and daily operational activities.
The trainee will assist in implementing safety programs, monitoring workplace conditions, and reinforcing safe work practices. This role works closely with employees and leadership to promote a strong safety culture while ensuring compliance with company policies and environmental regulations.
Responsibilities:
- Perform routine inspections of emergency equipment such as fire extinguishers, eyewash stations, and safety showers
- Inspect and maintain HSE supplies including PPE, spill kits, and first aid kits
- Assist with monitoring chemical storage and waste handling to ensure compliance
- Support workplace organization and housekeeping to promote safe conditions
- Participate in scheduled workplace inspections and follow up on corrective actions
- Report unsafe conditions, hazards, or near misses to leadership
- Assist with environmental compliance activities such as waste labeling and storage checks
- Track equipment inspections (e.g., forklifts, pallet jacks) to ensure completion
- Maintain inspection logs, checklists, and HSE documentation
- Support new hire safety orientations and training coordination
- Assist in incident investigations by gathering information and documentation
- Collaborate with team members to reinforce safe work practices
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Some college coursework in HSE, Environmental Science, or related field preferred; or
1–3 years of experience in an industrial, warehouse, or shop environment - Basic understanding of workplace safety practices and hazard recognition
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and stay organized
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Ability to read and interpret safety procedures and manuals
- Basic math and problem-solving skills
Physical Requirements:
- Regular use of hands for handling equipment and materials
- Frequent walking, bending, reaching, and communication
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally
- Must be able to work in an environment with potential exposure to machinery, chemicals, and varying noise levels
