Job Description:
This is a hands-on Yard Supervisor role supporting daily operations at an industrial distribution facility in Houston. The position leads yard and shipping activities to ensure materials are accurately picked, loaded, and shipped on time while maintaining safety, quality, and organization. The Yard Supervisor coordinates closely with sales, logistics, quality, and receiving teams, oversees a small team of yard personnel, and plays a key role in equipment readiness, training, and process improvement in a fast-paced, safety-driven environment.
Responsibilities:
- Lead daily yard and shipping operations to ensure accurate, timely picking, loading, and shipment of materials
- Supervise and organize a team of yard and shipping personnel, assigning work and monitoring productivity
- Ensure forklifts, cranes, pickers, and other equipment are safe, functional, and properly maintained
- Coordinate daily priorities with sales, logistics, receiving, and quality teams
- Manage outbound shipments, including flatbeds, motor freight, hot shots, will-call, and small parcel orders
- Review daily operational reports to assess workload and manage overtime as needed
- Oversee loading dock organization, traffic flow, and space utilization
- Verify materials, documentation, and shipment accuracy prior to release
- Address material discrepancies, non-conforming items, and order changes in coordination with quality and sales
- Support will-call customers by ensuring timely and accurate order loading
- Train yard personnel on processes, procedures, quality requirements, and safety standards
- Conduct daily safety talks and enforce safe work practices
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe yard and dock environment
- Participate in production meetings and contribute to process improvement initiatives
- Monitor shipping lanes to prevent missed or delayed shipments
- Document training, inspections, and quality checks as required
Qualifications and Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED required
- Bilingual (Spanish/English) a plus
- 3+ years of experience in industrial distribution or PVF/industrial materials environments
- Proven ability to lead, supervise, and organize a team of 7–10 employees
- Experience coordinating shipping, receiving, and yard operations
- Strong knowledge of material handling, shipping documentation, and quality processes
- Familiarity with forklifts, cranes, pickers, and other warehouse/yard equipment, including maintenance and safety protocols
- Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Ability to read and understand industry specifications, charts, and tables
- Capable of lifting up to 50 lbs and standing for extended periods
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities
- Self-motivated, proactive, and able to work independently
- Commitment to safety, process compliance, and maintaining a clean, organized work environment
